The Goggins Challenge -  4 Miles Every 4 hours for 48 Hours. 48 Miles in 2 days...Why Not!

The Purpose:

How do you want your book to read at the end of your life? This is a question that David Goggins poses at the end of the amazing "Can't Hurt Me". This is a question that I have been thinking about for the last couple years. What I thought I could accomplish and what I am capable of are two VERY different things. I started running last February of 2020. I ran my first Marathon in November of 2020. I DIDNT RUN 390 days ago! Now, I have put in over 1000 miles and think this challenge is an amazing one because of the MENTAL aspect. 

All of my running has always been easier when it had a purpose. We have currently raised $722 for the Equal Justice Initiative and I have also dedicated each one of these 48 miles to a person in my life. As I run that mile I will think about how that person has helped shape my life and the impact they have had on me. Lives can change in a moment and we all need to realize that our actions, our words, and how we show up everyday are stepping stones to a brighter future.

The first 4 mile run of 12 is about to go down at 10pm CST. I will be sharing a little about why I am doing this challenge, preparation, my plan of attack and what you can expect in the next 48 hours.

  • Died exactly 0 times!
I have been inspired by countless individuals to test my personal boundaries. David Goggins came up with the 40% rule. When you want to quit or think you have given it all, YOU HAVEN’T! You still have 60% in the tank. So strip your mind of your governor that may be holding you back and go out and do something awesome. I can’t wait to see what you are capable of. “Stay Hard!” Also, huge shout out to Blake Wallace of @wallacerealtygroupmsp who tore this challenge up on the ropes. We will never forget this experience!!!
​ Update Four - #GogginsChallenge 44 miles deep
11 runs of 12 are done. The sleep deprivation is getting me. The time between runs feels shorter and shorter. My muscles feel pretty good overall but sore and I have 3 blisters on one foot which feels awesome!! I cannot thank you all enough who have made a donation to The Equal Justice Initiative or if you have written me a note, comment text of encouragement. One more run to go...
Oh yeah and I will be going LIVE for my last mile. Tune in right around 6:30pm CST to see me close out the 48th and Final Mile!
​ Update Three - #GogginsChallenge Halfway Point
The first 6 runs of 12 are done. I have slept for a total of 5 hours. The last couple miles were tough. I got home and had some amazing chicken enchiladas and birthday cake. I think those are going to be the secret to a successful evening.
After this 10pm run I will be in completely uncharted territory for me. Over Marathon distance is an amazing feeling but this is only half way done. I will need to dig deeper than I ever have. More than I thought possible!
​ Update Two - #GogginsChallenge 12 of 48 Miles Completed
The first 3 runs of 12 are done. Sleep is not going so well but I feel great!!! Thinking about the impactful people in my life and the donations to EJI have been so inspiring .

Training:

I have been running 25-30 Miles a week for the last 3 months. Honestly, not a whole lot of specific training was done for this challenge. I wake up and run 3-6 miles almost everyday, so I don't view 4 mile runs as a challenge. When you add in lack of recovery time, sleep deprivation and repetition this could be a whole other beast! I do not know how specifically my body will react to this challenge but I am very excited to find out!

What I Will be Eating:

  • Bananas- Great for Potassium and Sugar
  • Salted Peanuts & Clif Bars- Great to fuel and ideally keep cramping to a minimum
  • NUUN Tablets- Electrolytes and Hydration
  • Whey Sport- Protein for recovery
  • Turkey Cheese Quesadillas- Delicious treat, combo nutrition all Macros

Execution:

I live in Minnesota. The weather is supposed to be pretty nice 30-50F. I plan on running the late night and early morning runs on my treadmill while putting the rest of the miles in outside. I will hopefully be able to sleep in 2 hour chunks and knock out the runs at a 9:30mi average. Each run will burn around 400 calories so I will need to take in fuel before and after each run. I am hoping that Hydration won't play into this as I will remain hydrated throughout the entire experience. I also, will be counting on a friend who will be doing the challenge with me to check in and make sure we are awake, alive and ready to CRUSH IT!
